Traditionally, some vital signs, such as pulse and blood pressure, were taken manually. It is not uncommon to see medical facilities use electronic BP cuffs and a pulse oximeter to take the BP and pulse. Personally speaking, I find machines to be more of a benefit and accurate in what they're designed to do. Humans that are not trained medically, can cause a human error in doing it manually.
