Now try this tasty thought experiment. Say some friends far outside the black hole decide to send you a snack. If they launch a red apple your way, it’s invisible to you at first. But keep your eyes peeled! Eventually, the apple shifts from invisible to blue, then to green, yellow, orange, and finally red, as it passes through gravitational zones that are closer and closer to the same strength as yours. Quick! Grab that apple before it disappears! Remember, once it whizzes past you, all its light continues in one direction, toward the center of the black hole, and you won’t see it anymore.
